A hybrid car is perfect for Edinburgh and saves you a ton on petrol. If I were flying into Edinburgh again I would use Dollar Haymarket..a 15 minute tram ride from the airport to Haymarket..Dollar is opposite the tram stop. Sat Nav will get you out of Edinburgh. Research insurance coverage options.

Verified travelerAug 2026

Check for tire coverage as there are lots of potholes on the road especially in highlands and Skye. There are no spares in the car

BraianAug 2026

I only used credit card insurance, for a trip to the highlands, a higher car helps in viewing and cushioning on some single-track roads.

Verified travelerJul 2026

There is 15 minute walk between the airport terminal and the car hire offices, which can be difficult with heavy luggage.

Verified travelerMay 2025

When you can see that the people renting the vehicle are all in their 70's don't put them into a car that is low to the ground, it makes it hard to get in and out of. In hide sight I should have went back into the building and ask for a different car.

CathieMay 2025

We originally booked a larger vehicle, but it was unavailable. There is a rental area at the airport which would’ve been more convenient. Takes a bit to get used to driving on opposite side of road.

Verified travelerApr 2025

I would: - take photos from every angle of the car - spot any damage - verify tires - verify gear-case - verify windows/ windows screen Then notify the team for any damage as per measurements

DavidApr 2025

Narrow cars are better unless you are experienced driving on roads more narrow than found in the United States

Verified travelerFeb 2025

Book direct, make sure your credit card has LDW or CDW. Fuel is expensive!

Verified travelerSep 2024

Our small car was really helpful. I can't imagine driving anything bigger, especially on the narrow roads in the highlands of Scotland. The parking garages around town are really nice and we utilized those when we could to avoid street parking. Traffic circles we're definitely interesting to get used to, so be prepared for a lot of them, and the fact that they are not all the same. Eg. Some with one lane, some with more than three, some with traffic light control, some that don't even appear to be a circle at all. It can be confusing if you aren't used to it.

Verified travelerSep 2024

The car was electric and I would not hesitate to rent another electric there. Infrastructure for charging was easily accessible, simple to use, and plentiful

Verified travelerSep 2024

I would say a small car is a must. If you travel outside of the city the roads are very narrow.

Verified travelerOct 2024

You need a credit card with your name on it. If you don’t have a credit card you will be asked to pay extra for the insurance Don’t forget to fill up the petrol before you drop off the car, they will charge you double.

Verified travelerOct 2024

Go with an agency with upfront fees. Check the insurance policies for both your private insurance and the insurance they offer and see what is covered. Don’t fall for upfront lower costs.

Verified travelerSep 2024

Small as possible for 2 reasons. Roads are narrower than we are used to in the states and gas was about 1.4 pounds a litre. Also parking areas are very small.

Verified travelerJul 2024

Check if they will accept the insurance policy you get before going, because if they don’t they won’t give you the rental without buying their insurance and then they won’t want to refund for a cancellation

RanjanAug 2024

There's two six-T in Edinburgh, so make sure you go to the right one.

Verified travelerAug 2024

Ensure you know exactly what branch they direct you to

Ian & KateAug 2024

Not a big car as the streets are narrow

Verified travelerMar 2024

Just be prepared for the commute from the airport to the rental agency. Need to bus it and walk and minute, but far easier than it seems. Don’t be overwhelmed.

JulieSep 2023

Other drivers were great, no honking, no cutting ppl off, so it made driving a pleasant experience for having to drive on the left side. Pause to think at all turns and roundabouts and it works like a charm.

Verified travelerOct 2023

Driving in Scotland is challenging. Automatic transmission helps. Rent a car with a spare tire, if possible. Agent told us afterwards that 40% of the car rentals have a flat tire at some point.

Verified travelerSep 2023

The driving was surprisingly easy. Traffic lights in Scotland display a red/yellow light combination before turning green. That helps anticipate getting the clutch and shifter ready.

Verified travelerSep 2023

Definitely rent a car from Nicolli auto.

TJSep 2023

MeganJun 2023

I did some reading on various websites about driving in Scotland. The narrow roads sound scarier than they are for the most part. Having a companion to help navigate and remind me to stay on the correct side of the road was very helpful

KatherineJul 2023

We took an Uber from central Edinburgh to the Alamo location at the Edinburgh airport which I would highly recommend. Our driver took us right to the pick-up office.

MikeAug 2023

Go as small as you can. Roads and parking stalls are not large so if you can give yourself more space it really makes it easier getting around.

WayneJul 2023

The central location in Edinburgh was easy to find. Get satellite navigation if possible as cell service data was sketchy. Bite the bullet and get the insurance.

JeffreyJun 2023

Pick up at the train station was very easy and quick.

Verified travelerJul 2023

Try Sixt, they are much easier to deal with.

RachelAug 2023

Driving in Edinburgh is very overwhelming. Got lost multiple times. Driving through Scotland was amazing. Would recommend checking out road signs and their meanings before you get here.

Verified travelerJul 2023

Roads are narrow and public parking isn't the easiest, but it's worth it to

Verified travelerJun 2023

Driving was very easy but could be stressful for some people

Verified travelerJul 2023

Be prepared for inclement weather. Car lot uncovered.

Verified travelerJul 2023

I did not drive much in Edinburgh. Scottish cities appear to be adopting a very negative approach to car drivers- more for getting extra cash from drivers than for environmental reasons. Foreign visitors need to be made aware of this.

MilaJul 2023

Don't use green motion. Believe the negative reviews

JENNIFERMay 2023

I didn’t drive in Edinburgh. I used it to drive around the islands and highlands. For Americans, it should be known the roads are much more narrow than the US, and the speed limit is higher considering how narrow they are. Drive where you feel comfortable, but have the courtesy to let others pass you at the designated “passing zones.” Also, in a lot of areas there is no shoulder, and it’s easy to fall into pot holes or clip debris on the side that can cause a blowout . Lastly, be very careful of the unpredictable sheep situation, especially if there are a lot of lambs around. The babies sort of prance around without a car in the world.

TisaMay 2023

Do it from the airport, not the city center. Travel as lightly as you can and keep to a mid sized car. And get a car with GPS as there were constant construction diversions.

JosephMay 2023

If you're used to driving on the right side of the road, navigating traffic and endless road construction in Edinburgh can be a challenge.

BenoitMay 2023

Bonne chance pour la conduis gauche. Il faut été courtois

Fortunately for travelers who would like to rent a car while in Edinburgh, Edinburgh Airport has a consolidated hire car center that makes it easier than ever to pick your car up after your flight lands. The hire car center is connected to the airport via a covered skywalk and is just a short walk away from the domestic and international terminals.
An important law to remember when driving in Edinburgh -- and in Scotland in general -- is that it is illegal to use a cell phone while driving -- and that includes using cell phones as a navigational device. So play it safe and have your passengers be the ones to direct you during your time in Edinburgh.
Like in many other major cities today, rush hour can cause major congestion in Edinburgh. Edinburgh’s morning rush hour goes from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and evening rush hour is usually from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Some of the major avenues and intersections to avoid during those hours include the Sheriffhall Roundabout and the Hermiston Junction.
If you are still on the fence on whether or not to rent a car during your time Edinburgh, then one thing to consider is that without one, the breathtaking countryside will be much harder to experience. After all, no trip to Scotland would be complete without witnessing the country’s majestic lochs and mountains. Some of the natural beauties and historic sites well within reach by car from Edinburgh include Loch Ness, Stirling Castle, and the Lammermuirs.

I asked for a pick up but the store I rented from said I wasn’t in their zone. It was a 17 minute drive. They offered to change my rental to a closer location to me but that location doesn’t do pick ups. Despite that being their main corporate motto and why I chose enterprise. So I had to walk about 20 minutes for pick up. There was a line out the door when I arrived. 45 minutes later I was served and rushed. I wasn’t the only 10am appointment but the 8,9, and 11 am all showed up at the same time and there was no priority. Got my day off to a rush. I booked an economy car to save fuel and deal with narrow highland roads and told him that. He said he upgraded me to a Mini Cooper, I said cool. But it was a countryman. Very bulky and made the first few days a tough drive. I was then surprised to have a visa bill 3x my quote. They double charge for the insurance and had to deal with that over the phone. Thankfully all sorted and drop off was fine in Glasgow. They actually drove me back.

We rented the car from noon but i had previously communicated that we would land late afternoon and even asked for instructions to get to the rental place at that time - we felt the agency was doing a scam that anyone not showing up at the indicated time of the booking would get their reservation cancelled so the rental agency would get the full amount and do a rebooking at the same or more expensive rate - this created a very bad experience even if we in the end paid the same price as promised after several arguments with them

Overall, I had a really good experience with Enterprise. The team was super helpful and professional. I had booked an SUV, but since the previous customer returned it late, I was given a citadine instead. It wasn’t ideal for long drives or hiking, but the staff were very friendly and did their best to help—even if the delay pushed my plans a bit. The car was in good condition, and since I had full insurance and the fuel tank option, I returned the vehicle without any problems. The whole return process was quick and easy. Despite the small hiccup, the service was great, prices were competitive, and the staff made it a positive experience. I’d definitely rent with them again! But they are following policy, so as long as the car is returned in good condition, they won’t try to scam you.

Horrible. They tried to rip me off with a bait and switch. When I arrived they said I had zero insurance and the cost to add it was TWICE the amount of the reservation. For example, the reservation was for around $200 and they wanted to charge me $600. When I complained they said they could drop it to $500 but required a $3000+ deposit and were going to limit the amount of miles I could drive without a penalty. Luckily my bank blocked the charge and I walked out and had to go look for another company to take my business. Never again and I think Kayak should consider removing them from their roster of rental companies. What a horrible experience to be in a foreign country and being ripped off like that. It's taking advantage of someone and luckily I was able to have Avis help me out last minute.

Finding the Green Motion at Waverley Station was very challenging. It was located in a parking garage with no clear markers or signs. We had to ask for help from multiple people to find the office. Once we arrived, the extra fees for insurance were extremely expensive. The hidden fees after they lure you in feel very scam like. The car itself was comfortable and clean. No complaints there, but when we went to drop off the vehicle, they wanted to charge us upwards of 400 pounds for a dent that already existed when we got the car. The staff were extremely rude and condescending about it, and made no offer for us to speak with upper management. They proceeded to tell us we were liable for costs even though when we picked up the car they said it had the dent. Everything about this agency felt underhanded and deceiving, like their ultimate goal is to get as much money from you as possible, but lure you in initially with the best price. I would NOT recommend Green Motion to anyone traveling and in search of a rental vehicle.

The harassment you receive on check in is exhausting. They don't accept the additional insurance you buy online, they charge you £1500 as a hold, and then threaten that you'll be liable for all £40,000 that the car is valued for if you don't show a million dollar insurance through your credit card or take on another £200+ in fees. Very shady business indeed.

Predatory practices around car damage, and didn't accept the 3rd party insurance coverage that I had purchased. At the point of pickup I then needed to provide additional coverage through my credit card. Poor communication and customer service throughout.

It was perfect, the category I rented would take beyond the agreed to be ready, so I received a free upgrade. I pulled out the car in Edinburgh (28 Edin Seafield), I don't know the name of the boy who attended me, but he was extremely polite, helpful and efficient, it was a great experience.

Had a great overall experience with Arnold Clark except for the pickup. Pickup location at airport is terrible and confusing. After calling and getting direction we finally found it, but then the driver missed us and left us standing in the rain. Had to call a second time to get picked up. Otherwise it was all good.

I had selected and booked a car based on its size and trunk storage (Skoda Otavia) and was quoted a price of $1088. Just before traveling I called to confirm my reservation and was told that the price was now $1239 because the first quoted price didn't include tax and surcharges. But when I arrived to pick up the car, it wasn't available. I was then told that the car that they had for me wouldn't be suitable or 4 adults with just carry on luggage (note no big luggage) but they could rent me a car that was better suited to our needs, but now the price changed to $2364 so the price had more than doubled from the original quote. As it turned out the Volvo that we ended up renting looked good and drove well but was too low to the ground and too hard to get in and out of for 4 adults in their 70's. And it was a bit rough on the poor roads of the northern part of the country, I assume it was because low profile tires.

Kiosk style mobile pickup in an underground garage where there is no phone reception. The credit card reader wasn’t working and they wanted to drive me to another location to pay. It took 40 minutes, even though I was the only customer and they decided at the end to use their own network to call in my payments and details to the other station. On return at 515 pm there was no one there and no sign of any kind, such as explaining where the key drop was. The Budget phone lines close at 4pm (one) and 5 pm (the other). Very annoying.

We were very pleased with the upgraded vehicle we rented, however the pick up was absolutely ridiculous. We arrived 15 minutes ahead of pur reservation time yet were placed 18th in the "queue". We were forced to wait nearly 2 hours to get our car despite having already booked in advance online. This was the low point of our trip. It cost us valuable time ahead of a long day of driving. Very, very bad service by the Hertz affiliates in Edinburgh. To be fair, the Hertz staff were friendly and doing their best, but there just were not enough staff members available to keep up with the volume of customers.

Will, Oct 2024

Intermediate SUV

It was booked without the insurance that I required to drive away. I consequently had to pay an additional £85 on pickup in order to get the car. Thereby invalidating the claimed price. Since kayak, booked through Expedia, which booked through routes, which actually just booked through europcar, no one there had any idea why they let the booking happen at all. Surely this is a problem. Can I have my money back for false advertising? Cheers
